From Combat to Costumes
After high school, Yvonne joined the United States Marine Corps where she served for 5 years as an Ammunition Technician. But her passion for visual arts & storytelling through clothing led her to pursue & obtain a Bachelor of Fine Arts in Fashion Design from the University of North Texas in Denton, Texas.
She landed a position at Fort Worth, Texas based company Williamson- Dickie, where she designed the shirt worn by 'Big Tex' from 2016-2018 at the Texas State Fair. Some of her work has also been featured in short indie films, the Real Housewives of Dallas & the Dallas Morning News. She has showcased her designs in several local fashion shows, won 1st place awards for design competitions & has debuted her costume design work with Day of Absence at Metamorphosis Theatre in May of 2018.
Last year she spent her Summer in Los Angeles, California as the only costume design intern chosen through the nationwide competitive Television Academy internship program. There she worked with designers on television shows: Black-ish (ABC), Strange Angel (CBS), The Man in the High Castle (Amazon Prime) & Santa Clarita Diet (Netflix). She is also the recent recipient of the Taubman Scholarship for Excellence in Graduate Stage Design & the Black Theatre Network's Judy Dearing Design Competition Award for her costume design work in Southern Methodist University's opera production of Our Town.
Currently, she is pursuing her Master of Fine Arts in Stage Design with a focus in Costume & Scenic Design at Southern Methodist University in Dallas, Texas. She hopes to one day see more diversity in theatre, film & television & plans to relocate to Chicago upon completion of her education.
